Emirates, the second largest airline in the world in available seat kilometres, is on track to become one of the largest airlines in the world. In addition to the recent additional order of 32 A380 ($US 11.5 billion (AED 42.2), Emirates has 48 Airbus 380s, 70 Airbus 350s, 48 Boeing 777-300s (in addition to the initial 18, at the July 2010 Farnborough Air Show, Emirates ordered 30 Boeing 777-300ERs valued at US$9.1 billion (Dhs33.4 billion) and 7 Boeing air freighters on order totaling over 200 wide-body aircraft worth $US 67 billion. In a year where the aviation industry was rocked by the economic downturn, Emirates Airline recently reported its 22nd year of profit, up 416 percent to close at US$ 964 million (AED 3.5 billion) over its 2008-09 profits of US$ 187 million (AED 686 million).
A new terminal at Dubai International Airport is dedicated to the Emirates fleet. By 2012 Emirates expects to have twice as many jets in its fleet as it does today, able to carry over 33 million passengers every year. Planning also foresees the fleet more then tripling in size over the next 10 years.
The airline is also investing in leading-edge facilities to support this rapidly growing fleet. This includes a state-of-the-art jet engine testing and engineering facility, which is one of the world’s largest civil aviation maintenance centres.
